Performance
Sotto Voce
Frank Gizycki & Jason Respilieux
- Dates
- Saturday 23 May, 14:15
- Duration
- 15 min. to 20 min.
“Sotto Voce” is a musical cue calling on the performer to play softly, quietly, “under the (dominant) voice” so to speak. Here, dance and music intertwine in all the gentleness the performers can muster. They reveal and offer, “under the (normalized) voice”, another way of considering what might be the “power” of gentleness.
Frank Gizycki
Frank Gizycki (France, 1993-) is a choreographic artist based in Brussels.
He trained at the C.N.S.M.D (Lyon), the Ecole des Sables (Senegal) and at P.A.R.T.S (Brussels) from which he graduated in 2016. Since then, he has performed for Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Jason Respilieux, Baptiste Conte and Le Balcon, with whom he traveled the European stages through repertoire and creations, and, in situ projects (museums, parks, streets, etc.).
He is a member of the Figure ensemble, the M∑al Collective and the Datura company with whom he creates and explores the relationship of dance to contemporary, jazz and opera music.
Since 2022, he has co-organized the Débord&DesRives festival which relays and supports artistic, citizen and peasant initiatives in Tarn (France).
He never stops articulating the flavors of the movement through contact with the artists, works and experiences with which he crafts his journey. He is intimately connected to the research of the artist Jason Respilieux with whom he co-choreographed Die Kunst Der Fugue and Sotto Voce; as well as with the artist Lore Stessel, with whom he interweaves dance, music and visual arts in all terrain.
Jason Respilieux
Jason Respilieux (BE) is an artist living between Brussels and Tarn (France). He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels and at Codarts. He graduated from P.A.R.T.S in 2014. Since then, he has collaborated with choreographers such as Salva Sanchis, Claire Croizé, Louise Vanneste and Anneleen Keppens. He will be taking part in the productions A Love Supreme, The Six Brandenburg Concertos and the Dark Red museum project by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker's company Rosas between 2017 and 2023. At the same time, he teaches dance and develops a pedagogy based on emancipation through collaboration.
In 2019, Jason studies permaculture. He incorporates the ecological and ethical principles of this practice into his artistic approach. In 2022 he co-founded ArTerre (FR) and its eclectic annual festival Débord&DesRives. In 2024, he co-founded the organization Maison Vive, a project dedicated to producing and supporting emerging artists.
In 2022, Jason created his first solo work, J'en pris les oiseaux / Criiez oracle, presented at Théâtre Les Brigittines. It then toured as an adapted site specific version in France and Spain, in the form of danced-walks. Since 2023, he has been working with film director Petronella Van der Hallen on a new short Zilverreiger, and then with musician Romina Lischka on Die Kunst Der Fuge. Thanks to a carte blanche from l’ADDA du Tarn (FR), he worked with the author Julie Aminthe on Au Plus près Du Vivant en Corps et En Mots. Since 2023, Jason also worked as a dramaturge for choreographers Baptiste Conte and Fanny Brouyaux.
Jason's approach, at the intersection of dance, film, ecology and collaborative practices, is rooted in a desire to encourage new, nuanced perspectives on our world.
